The Carmen Case : le public a rendu son verdict !

The Carmen Case played to a full house for two unique performances at the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg on January 11th and 12th. Both the audience and critics paid heartfelt tribute to this contemporary opera, which intelligently explores the mechanisms leading to femicide within Bizet's original work.

Revisiting Carmen? The challenge is significant! To provide context for Bizet’s work, librettist Alexandra Lacroix chose to collaborate with contemporary music composer Diana Soh. The result of years of work and research is poignant.

Navigating between eras on the stage of a fictional courtroom, the two protagonists of the 1875 masterpiece recount their story, while witnesses and experts take turns at the stand. In this audacious play, the audience assumes the role of the jury, immersed in the twists and turns of a narrative that sadly echoes trials like those too often played out in courtrooms today.

The Carmen Case inspires a desire to see or revisit the original. The play raises numerous questions and has the courage to engage the audience in finding their own answers.

Under the direction of Lucie Leguay, we delved into Diana Soh’s scores with passion. Between classic and contemporary, The Carmen Case is a subtle and constant dialogue between eras.

We wish great success to this work as it continues its journey with the Ars Nova ensemble, and for which Diana Soh was recently nominated for the Victoires de la musique classique in the « composers » category.
