Who are we?
United Instruments of Lucilin, founded in 1999 by a group of passionate and committed musicians, is Luxembourg’s chamber music ensemble dedicated to contemporary music. Devoted exclusively to commissioning and promoting works from the 20th and 21st centuries, United Instruments of Lucilin is now internationally recognized for its original and innovative programs.
Curious and open-minded, Lucilin constantly explores new forms of musical and stage creation. The ensemble occupies unexpected spaces and imagines unique formats—from Black Mirror by Alexander Schubert, an immersive experience in an abandoned hotel, to L’Heure Bleue by Dimitri Mallet, an ephemeral museum set in nature. This approach extends to hybrid forms of live performance, where music meets other artistic disciplines, such as Kein Licht by Philippe Manoury, a “thinkspiel” that questions environmental and technological issues through dialogues between text and sound, or Les Murs meurent aussi by François Sarhan, a visual and socially engaged performance exploring the impact of borders and contemporary conflicts through testimonies and imagery.
With the aim of making musical creation accessible to everyone, Lucilin carries out numerous outreach and mediation projects: Blind Date, concert introductions, artist talks, and participatory projects such as Aussi Fragile Que Possible by Elsa Biston, where a network of vibrating objects responds to the audience’s gestures. On the educational side, the ensemble organizes the annual Luxembourg Composition Academy in collaboration with the rainy days festival, educational projects with the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg, and workshops in schools.
Since 2023, Lucilin has launched its own independent concert series Lucilin in the City and also performs at the Philharmonie Luxembourg in its own series Lucilin: Now!. Among its recent commissions are works by Diana Soh, Igor C Silva, Albena Petrovic-Vratchanska, Mirela Ivičević, Camille Kerger, Patrick Muller, Sina Fallahzadeh, and Yang Song.
