The piece deals with the impact that borders and walls – their erection, destruction and
appropriation – have on people’s lives and identities. The ongoing brutal war in Ukraine is a starting point for our investigation. The intense and pervasive media coverage, propaganda and geopolitical analysis that surround this war and the others that have begun since, make it difficult to discern what’s real and leave us seemingly informed yet powerless. Instead of voicing a political agenda, we are using testimonies and biographical material to voice the impressions and visions of those affected by the war and the violence of walls. In video reenactments and live scenes we uncover the stories that emerge around frontiers without trying to sentimentalize, or generalize.
The performance is a musical exploration of the power of borders, a grotesque tour de force into the heart of identities shaped by violence.
Borders and Boundaries – Dealing with Identities
Walls can make human beings who they are. The division they bring along changes lives for the
worse but sometimes also for the better. The project aims to explore how these simple lines –
straightforward or crooked, sonic or hallucinated – impact people. Borders are also related to
boundaries, a crucial notion in today’s Western world. Our boundaries make us who we are and
keep us sane, as long as we respect them, thus goes the therapeutic narrative. The piece
explores what borders and boundaries have in common – where they constitute who we are and
where they destroy and divide.
