L’Autre Hiver

Dominique Pauwels’ new opera takes as starting point the tempestuous relationship between the two legendary poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine. Two travellers appear on the deck of a ship wandering across a landscape of nordic ice. But are they really representing the two famous French writers? L’Autre hiver takes the audience on a poetic and playful voyage exploring the power games and desires of two children which are as terrible as they are mythical. Denis Marleau’s approach is distinguished by challenging literary choices, meticulous directing and the innovative use of audio and video technology. Filip Rathé conducts a cast of two singers, United Instruments of Lucilin, a children’s choir, a women’s choir and – most intriguing of all – a chorus of videographic characters which interact with the real performers in the most fascinating way.
