Call for participants – Luxembourg Composition Academy 2020

The Luxembourg Composition Academy offers young composers the opportunity to spend one week working in an inspiring and creative environment in the heart of Luxembourg.

Undergraduate and (post)graduate composers are invited to apply for the Luxembourg Composition Academy, held from November 16 to 22 2020 at neimënster (historic Abbaye de Neumünster) in Luxembourg with the faculty consisting of composers Carola Bauckholt and Matthew Shlomowitz as well as the Luxembourgish ensemble United Instruments of Lucilin.

The program consists of lectures, one-to-one lessons with Carola Bauckholt and Matthew Shlomowitz as well as a workshop on How to pres- ent one’s music to the public with the musicians of the ensemble. All selected composers are invited to write a new piece for United Instruments of Lucilin. These compositions will be premiered in the Academy’s final concert on November 22, 2020 as part of the rainy days festival, Philharmonie Luxembourg’s international festival for contemporary music. In addition, the participants will have the opportunity to attend all the concerts of the festival.

The academy will be taught in English and German. The participation fee is 450 € and includes accommodation (possible from November 12 to November 23) at neimënster as well as all concert tickets for the whole rainy days festival.

(if available) to: hello@lucilin.lu by July 24. The selected composers will be notified by August 1.

The Luxembourg Composition Academy is a cooperation between neimënster – Cultural Center Neumünster Abbey, United Instruments of Lucilin and Philharmonie Luxembourg.


Meet the composers:

Carola Bauckholt

After working at the Theater am Marienplatz (TAM) in Krefeld for several years, Carola Bauckholt studied com- position at the Musikhochschule Köln with Mauricio Kagel (1978 – 1984). In 1985 she founded the music publisher Thürmchen Verlag with Caspar Johannes Walter before also founding together the Thürmchen Ensemble six years later. She has received numerous residencies and prizes such as the Best Sound Design Award for The Flounder from the London International Animation Festival 2019, in collaboration with Elizabeth Hobbs and Klangforum Wien. For 2021 she has been invited to a three-month residency at Villa Aurora in Los Angeles.
In 2013, she was elected as a member of Akademie der Künste in Berlin. In 2015, she was appointed as professor of composition with focus on contemporary music theatre at the Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität in Linz in Austria. In 2020, she was elected as a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts. She also teaches as a guest professor around the world.

Matthew Shlomowitz
Matthew Shlomowitz composes music and performance pieces. His opera Electric Dreams was premiered at the 2017 Musikprotokoll Festival; in 2019 his works Glücklich, Glücklich, Freude, Freude for keyboards and orchestra was premiered at the Donaueschingen Musiktage, and Graveyard Slot by Ensemble Nikel at the Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik. Recently, asamisimasa released a CD of his work on the All That Dust label.
He has developed three big projects: Letter Pieces, open score pieces combining physical action and music; Popular Contexts, which combine recognisable recordings with instrumental music; and a series of lecture-pieces addressing aesthetic issues. In 2017 he collaborated with dancer Shila Anaraki and violinist Aisha Orazbayeva on an hour-long work, Lecture About Sad Music and Happy Dance.
Shlomowitz teaches at University of Southampton and co-directs Ensemble Plus Minus. He has taught on Ensemble Nikel’s 2017 Tzlil Meudcan Summer Course and on the Ensemble Offspring’s 2018 Hatched Academy.

United Instruments of Lucilin
The ensemble United Instruments of Lucilin was founded in 1999 by a group of passionate and committed musicians and is the only Luxembourgish chamber music ensemble specialised in contemporary music. Dedicated exclusively to promoting and commissioning works of the 20th and 21st century, United Instruments of Lucilin is now known for its outstanding programs around the world.
In about 40 concerts a year, Lucilin presents a broad scope of musical events, ranging from “traditional” concerts to music theatre productions, projects for children and improvisation sessions.
United Instruments of Lucilin has commissioned works, among others and together with the Philharmonie Luxembourg, by Alexander Schubert, Pierre-Alexander Tremblay, Aurélio Edler-Copes, Philippe Manoury and Mauro Lanza.
